Matrioshka means a "little Matryona", which is the Russian word for "mother". (They are also referred to as matrioshka, metreshka, matrioska, babushka, babooshka or stacking dolls. No matter what you call them they are fun and highly collectible.)
These dolls represent generations of women in a family and date back to times when families were matrilineal.
They represent one of the oldest symbols of human culture. Even now-a-days they are still often considered to be a symbol of motherhood and fertility.
The dolls we offer have all been handmade by artisans in the Moscow region and are of exceptional high qualtiy. Each set has been carefully turned on a lathe from the wood of the Linden tree. Each is then hand-painted by the artist and lastly laquered and / or lavishly finished with golden foils or glitter.
Linden trees are beautiful and tall. Linden soothes. Every part of these great healing trees is benevolent to humans. The paired, rather large leaves are heart-shaped. The root systems are very deep.
The peoples of Northern Europe have long held a special place of affection for what was widely perceived to be the 'female' Linden tree. It was seen as generating divine knowledge, truth, justice, clarity and a balance of desciveness and compassion. In Germany the Linden was dedicated to Freya, the mistress of the Earth and goddess of love, in Scandanavia it was the most important of the three guardian trees of a homestead.
Despite its soft appearence, Linden has the power to put us in touch with the life force of the Earth. Linden is the place where heaven and earth meet. When you cannot concentrate, when your energies are in disarray, you may find calm and stillness in the presence of Linden.
